THE TELICO COTTON GIN, ENNIS, TX
BUILT IN 1940 & POSSIBLY CONNECTED TO CLYDE BARROW
(of Bonnie & Clyde)
The Telico Gin, located in Ellis County, Texas, has a rich history that dates back to its original construction in May 1940. Initially serving as a working cotton gin, it has since been transformed into a charming event venue. The gin's conversion into an event center was a dream come true for James and Connie Trojacek, who purchased the property in 2014. The renovation of the "Seed Barn" building, now known as the "Seed Barn," is a testament to the gin's enduring character and versatility. The Telico Gin is not only a historical site but also a testament to the community's commitment to preserving its heritage while offering modern event spaces.
Clyde Chestnut Barrow (Bonnie & Clyde) was born on March 24, 1909, into a poor farming family in Telico, Texas. (Telico, TX, is a community within Ennis, TX) The Barrow family struggled financially, and in the early 1920s, they too moved to West Dallas. Clyde’s early years were filled with stealing. By his late teens, he had already accumulated a criminal record for stealing cars and robbing small stores. Clyde Barrow worked as a tenant farmer in Telico, Texas, raising cotton and other crops with his family. He was born there and grew up in a cotton farming family, which indicates that he had connections to the Telico cotton gin in Telico, TX. He met Bonnie in January 1930 in Dallas while visiting a friend. Bonnie was 19 and married to an imprisoned murderer; Clyde was 21 and unmarried. Soon after, he was arrested for a burglary and sent to jail. He escaped using a gun Bonnie had smuggled to him, was recaptured, and was sent back to prison. Clyde was paroled in February 1932, rejoined Bonnie, and resumed a life of crime. It has been said that Telico was one of the places they sought refuge to hide out from the law.
